Simply stated, sustainability refers to development approaches that satisfy the choices of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to make decisions of their own. It considers the preservation of the incredibly complex web of nature, as well as culture in terms of our perceptions, attitudes and actions towards the natural environment. In the face of overwhelming change, sustainability is an ideal that absorbs our genuine hope to create places with enough integrity to persist for our grandchildren and beyond.
The Old Mill Bed & Breakfast in Fredericksburg, Texas is a 15-cabin village designed and constructed by Gateway Planning's Milosav Cekic in 1997. The project is substantially comprised of recycled buildings. 150-year old log cabins, known for their extremely high thermal efficiency, were brought in from Kentucky and Tennessee. The cabins were cleaned, fumigated and reconstructed with modern amenities appropriate for their use as lodging for weekend getaways.
The design of the Old Mill Village, and the utilization of natural materials, will enable it to endure over time, whether as a bed & breakfast, a civic destination or a residential enclave.
